NPCRDC executive summary 47 - What do patients want from their GP?
Delivering services in line with the preferences of patients is an important part of government health policy. These preferences relate to ideas about what services should be provided and how they should be delivered. The consultation with the GP is the bedrock of effective primary care and patient preferences concerning consultations are crucial.
There are many different aspects of the consultation which may be important to patients including the time they wait to get an appointment, choice about appointment times, the communication skills of the GP and the continuity of care they receive. Giving patients everything they want may not be possible within the limited resources of the National Health Service. So it is important to understand the priority that patients place on different aspects of the consultation with their GP. It is also important to know if those priorities vary between different groups of patients, or between patients with different types of problems.
