Healthcare-associated infections

Healthcare-associated infections are a major concern to patients and the public as a result of both high rates of infection across the NHS, and media coverage of outbreaks at individual hospitals. The government has put in place a range of policies designed to reduce healthcare-associated infections in NHS organisations in England (with a similar priority being given in Scotland and Wales). This briefing provides some background on the infections that give most concern, their causes, prevalence and impact. It also summarises the policies and strategies being deployed in England to reduce infections, and offers some analysis of their likely effectiveness.

Food Matters: Towards a Strategy for the 21st Century

The Cabinet Office has published the results of a ten month Strategy Unit project looking at food policy across Government – and concludes that rising demand, climate change, and trade and productivity restrictions must all be addressed

 

Adults facing Chronic Exclusion (ACE) Programme

The ACE Programme is a 3 year, £6million fund designed to test new approaches to tacking chronic social exclusion amongst the most marginalised people in society.

Four Government Departments are sponsoring the programme: Home Office, Communities and Local Government, Department of Health and the Department for Work and Pensions. Each has contributed £1.5million over the next three years for the ACE programme.

Agency welcomes Cabinet Office report

The Agency has welcomed the report from the Cabinet Office Strategy Unit on a new food policy framework for the UK.

The report, Food Matters – Towards a Strategy for the 21st Century, looks at how different elements of the food system can be better integrated and its impact economically, socially and environmentally. It recognises that central government needs to work with the public, businesses from all parts of the food chain, other stakeholders, and other tiers of government, to put a new food policy framework in place.

 

 

Office for National Statistics

 

Births and deaths in England and Wales

The Office for National Statistics has published figures for births and deaths in England and Wales in 2007. There were 690,013 live births in 2007 compared with 669,601 in 2006, an increase of 3.0 per cent. In 2007, there were 3,345 infant deaths registered giving a rate of 4.8 deaths per 1,000 live births.

 

 

National Patient Safety Agency

 

Standards of cleanliness and food in NHS hospitals throughout England have improved according to the annual Patient Environment Action Team (PEAT) data for 2008, published by the National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA).
