Annual health check shows significant improvements across NHS
The Healthcare Commission (HC), England's healthcare watchdog, has published its Annual Health Check - the toughest and most comprehensive assessment of the NHS. The report shows significant improvements across the health service with 42 trusts rated as 'excellent', over twice as many as last year.
Seal of approval to improve health and social care information
The Department of Health has gone out to tender to find an independent operator for its new scheme to provide a seal of approval ensuring health and social care information is reliable.
Chair of International Academic Health Science Centre Designation Panel announced
Health Minister, Ben Bradshaw, today announced the appointment of Sir Alan Langlands as Chair of the international panel that is being established to designate Academic Health Science Centres (AHSCs) in England. The international panel will make a recommendation to the Secretary of State for Health about the partnerships that should be awarded AHSC status. The panel will offer a form of "peer review" and will identify the organisations best placed to compete internationally alongside leading AHSCs elsewhere in the world, such as Harvard, Johns Hopkins and the Karolinska Institute.
National Clinical Directors appointed for Hospital and Community Pharmacy
The appointment of two National Clinical Directors for Pharmacy was announced by the Department of Health. Their appointment fulfils the commitment made in the Pharmacy White Paper to ensure that the proposed initiatives are supported by strong, authoritative, clinical leadership at local and national levels.

Over 50 percent of GP surgeries are now offering patients extended opening hours, the Department of Health announced.

Three years on: Survey of the emotional development and well-being of children and young people.
This 2007 survey follows-up the second national survey of children's mental health and well-being in the UK, carried out in 2004. The follow-up survey aims to identify the persistence, onset, risk factors and outcomes of childhood mental disorders. And further, to examine resilience and protective factors and the medium term effect of special education needs on subsequent psychological health, absenteeism and exclusions.

NICE
The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has published new public health guidance on occupational therapy interventions and physical activity interventions to promote the mental wellbeing of older people in primary care and residential care.
The guidance focuses on the role of occupational therapy interventions and physical activity interventions in the promotion of mental wellbeing for older people. It is for NHS primary care and other professionals who have a direct or indirect role in, and responsibility for, promoting older people's mental wellbeing.

TA159 NICE issues guidance on treating chronic pain
The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has published final guidance on the use of spinal cord stimulation to treat chronic pain. The guidance relates specifically to long term pain which is caused by problems with the body’s nerves (neuropathic origin) or a lack of oxygen to parts of the body (ischaemic origin).
