This document sets out the rationale and guidance for primary care trusts' freedom to re-name their trusts as NHS Local. In simple terms, this means that PCT organisations (including Teaching PCTs) could adopt the NHS prefix before their place name.  For example, Blackpool PCT will become known as NHS Blackpool and Bournemouth and Poole Teaching PCT will become known as NHS Bournemouth and Poole (rather than NHS Bournemouth and Poole Teaching PCT).

Medical revalidation - principles and next steps: the Report of the Chief Medical Officer for England's Working Group

This report sets out the principles and next steps for implementing medical revalidation in the United Kingdom. A new revalidation system is being established, and in future, doctors will be required to demonstrate to the General Medical Council that they are up-to-date and fit to practise medicine. Doctors who take part in revalidation will be granted a license to practise and will be reassessed every five years.

 

Responsible officers and their duties relating to the medical profession [Closing date: 24 October 2008]

This consultation seeks views on what should be included in secondary legislation covering the reform of professional regulation, including the creation of responsible officers. These will be senior doctors with personal responsibility for evaluating the conduct and performance of doctors and making recommendations on their fitness to practise as part of revalidation.

 

The Council for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence (CHRE) Draft Regulations 2008: a paper for consultation [Closing date: 16 September 2008]

This consultation seeks views on proposals for the membership of the reformed Council for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence Council. These proposals provide details of the terms of office of council members, criteria for the disqualification, suspension or removal of members from office, committees appointed by the Council and transitional arrangements in terms of appointments.

 

Report to Ministers from the Department of Health steering group on the statutory regulation of practitioners of acupuncture, herbal medicine, traditional Chinese medicine and other traditional medicine systems practised in the UK

This report identifies issues and proposes options for education and training, registration, fitness to practise and other essential aspects of regulation of traditional medicine practice.

 

Membership governance in NHS Foundation Trusts: a review for the Department of Health

This report summarises the findings of an independent review of membership governance in NHS foundation trusts, including the experience of creating a membership, establishing a board of governors and deciding how best to use members and governors

 

A framework for the performance management of high security hospitals

This framework describes the structure and mechanisms by which the maintenance of the Secretary of State’s 'Line of Sight' to high security hospitals should be discharged by Strategic Health Authorities (SHAs).   The quarterly performance spreadsheet describes the data which is collected quarterly to inform SHAs' performance management of the hospitals.

 

Health and Social Care Act 2008 receives Royal Assent

The Health and Social Care Act 2008, which will enhance the safety and quality of care and improve public health, has received Royal Assent.

Health Secretary Alan Johnson callx for a national movement to tackle the growing problem of obesity. In a major speech on public health the Secretary of State for Health outlinex the public health implications of the obesity epidemic and arguex that our strategy to combat obesity will only succeed if every part of our society recognises the problem and joins together to takes steps to address it.

Health and Care Minister Ivan Lewis announced the sites that will benefit from £80million of Government funding to build extra care housing, enabling more older people and those with dementia and long-term conditions to live in a home of their own. Social Value Judgements: Principles for the Development of NICE Guidance describes the principles that NICE should follow in designing the processes it uses to develop its guidance and in developing individual pieces of guidance. It is mainly about the judgements that NICE and its advisory bodies should apply when making decisions about the effectiveness and cost effectiveness of interventions, especially where such decisions affect the allocation of NHS resources.

Draft Commission Regulation foods suitable for people intolerant to gluten (England)

 

The proposed Commission Regulation will put in place compositional criteria related to the claims ‘gluten-free’ and ‘very low gluten’ for foods that have been manufactured specifically to satisfy the particular nutritional requirements of people who are intolerant to gluten, as provided for in Commission Directive 89/398/EEC (as amended) on foods for particular nutritional uses.
