High quality care for all: NHS Next Stage Review final report

The final report of Lord Darzi's NHS Next Stage Review. It responds to the 10 SHA strategic visions and sets out a vision for an NHS with quality at its heart.

After a 12-month review, led by 2,000 clinicians and staff across the country and involving 60,000 patients, public and staff, Lord Darzi has set out proposals that will give patients more choice and information, reward the hospitals and clinics that offer both the highest quality of care and provide the most responsive services.

A high quality workforce: NHS Next Stage review

As part of the Next Stage Review, the future of the NHS workforce has been considered. The main findings are in the final report of the review.

NHS Next Stage Review: Our vision for primary and community care

Our vision is for primary and community care to provide high quality, personal care and support, treating people when they're sick and helping them stay healthy, where and when they need it most.

Primary and community care services are regarded with pride at home and admiration abroad.  Thanks to the dedication of family doctors, community nurses, health visitors, allied health professionals, social care professionals, pharmacists, dentists and opticians, most patients enjoy good quality care, close to home.  There are high levels of satisfaction with services and trust in the staff who provide them.

A poll carried out by ICM Research for the BBC asked 1,040 people questions about the NHS and found that 40% listed the risk of infections such as MRSA and Clostridium difficile as their top concern. Despite the concerns raised by the survey, 82% of respondents said they were proud of the health service.

NHS dental services

In April 2006 the Department of Health reformed the NHS General Dental Service and issued a number of criteria for success: patient experience; clinical quality; NHS commissioning and improving dentists' working lives. This report examines whether the criteria have been met. It concludes that the Department's original goal that patient access to dental services would improve from April 2006 has not been realised. In terms of clinical quality, while the Department argued that the new contract would improve preventive care, this was disputed by dentists who claimed that the new contract failed to provide the time and the financial incentive to do so.

Motivation and Confidence: What does it take to change behaviour?

This is the fourth paper in a series, Kicking Bad Habits, on how people can be encouraged to adopt healthy behaviour. The paper considers the influence of an individual's motivation and confidence in modifying their health behaviours. While there is good evidence, in theory, that they are two key determinants of behaviour change, there remains little clarity about which behavioural interventions are successful.
