It was our first birthday this week! We launched NHS Evidence – infections, as the Infections Specialist Library, on 15th September at Health Protection 2008 and we are sending you this newsletter from our stand at Health Protection 2009.

To match our regular commitment to keep you up to date with the best infections related evidence, news and events, we also have a fitting selection of new developments to show you. Our new homepage went live over the weekend and we have launched our first topic specific page which aims to make it even easier to find ‘the best of the best’ available evidence for HIV and Sexually Transmitted Infections as well as topic specific links and Annual Evidence Updates. Along with both these pages we have launched our site tutorials (apple) | (windows) and our topic specific page tutorial (apple) | (windows).

As always if you have any comments about the site or our service please let us know at isc@hpa.org.uk. If you are one of our more tech-savvy subscribers, you can also follow our popular twitter feed @NHSE_Infections of updates, news, information and events.

August News Roundup

News was slow this summer as everyone took their holidays. Even so, in keeping with the theme of the summer, August had its fair share of Swine Flu stories. Tens of thousands were reported to be faking swine flu symptoms to stock up on Tamiflu, despite other stories suggesting that it causes sickness and nightmares in children. On the other hand, there was much progress on a Swine flu vaccine as tests showed it was successful.

The E. coli story of this month had been preceeded by another a month ago. Other primates were getting the blame for our illnesses, again! After the previous month's reports of Gorrillas and HIV, this month gave us Chimps and Malaria.

Lastly other summer activities led to the structure of the HIV genome being decoded and teenagers on the beach in Dorset being offered Chlamydia tests in an innovative approach to controlling the spread of STIs.

NHS Evidence - infections, the infections specialist collection, is based at the Centre for Infections, part of the Health Protection Agency in Colindale, London.
